In French, we worked on sounding out our winter french vocabulary words. Most of the students were successfully able to sound out the beginning letter to correspond with the sound. Way to go!
Our sea turtle inquiry is still a major focus in Mrs. Moore's homeroom today. We made sea turtle/shark books and talked about how they were non-fiction because they told facts, had a title and an author and illustrator. We will continue to work on them tomorrow. In French, we worked on sounding out our winter french vocabulary words. Most of the students were successfully able to sound out the beginning letter to correspond with the sound. Way to go! Today was a special art day in our kinder class. We made our own "les flocons de neige" by using canvases, painters tape and paint. They are all unique, just like our students. Keep an eye open for them in your child's mailbag tonight. It was such a great activity to scaffold upon our "l'hiver" inquiry. We used our new French vocabulary, French colours, and our fine motor skills. In math, we introduced the concept of "graphing" and our friends understood that graphs are a way of measuring information. We graphed our favourite winter activity in French. It was a tie between skating and sledding. The big news of the day was an inquiry which happened at the snowcone factory. Bella, Brian, John, Caelen and Reese decided to build a wall around it because they "sold" all the snowcones. They independently made a "closed" and "open" sign. They explained that they were closed for business until they made more snowcones. Once they had more cones, they re-opened by making a door and a window in their wall. This sparked questions on why we build walls and what they are used for. I think I feel a new inquiry coming.... Sorry it's been so long since I've updated Mrs. Moore's homeroom. I have been away at quite a few workshops and meetings over the last two weeks. The seaturtle inquiry in well underway. Today we made seaturtles out of CDs with jewels. We cut out the body parts and glued them independently. We introduced "les parties du corps" of the seaturtle in French. We also continue to work on French winter words and simple questions in French. Look for your child's French writing in their mailbags tonight. Happy Monday. The sun is shining and we finally had outdoor recess. It was a bit blustery, but we at least got a few minutes to play in the fresh snow before it got too cold in the afternoon. In religion, Mrs. Shackleton told the students the story of how Jesus told the fishermen to become "fishers of men and women". We had a correlating craft to support our new learning. John decided that an elephant was fishing. Neat! To scaffold upon our ice/snow inquiry, we set up a snow cone factory at the dramatic play center. We put out Styrofoam ball to paint with cones and the students made signs with the amount they wanted to charge for each cone. Hayden said we should charge "the one with the moose on it" coin. In French, we continue to talk about winter and use our vocabulary in our writing. We have noticed that many of the students are independently able to ask to get a drink of water or go to the bathroom in French. We are so proud of all their progress. Happy PJ/Movie day! We sure had a fun packed Friday! Today was our CGE assembly and we want to congratulate John for be chosen as our "Caring Family Member" for the month of December. We are so proud of you John!! Big thanks to Owen for bringing in the movie "Planes" for our afternoon movie. We had popcorn and ate the cookies what we baked together. They were oatmeal raisin and were so delicious! A big thanks to Caelen for all his extra help baking the cookies and to Brian for helping to clean up afterwards. We have such excellent SK role models! Congratulations to Preston for being such a great role model to our class by being quiet in the cubby and at the learning carpet. Way to go!! A HUGE Merci to all our parents who sent in items for the food bank. It is through your continued generosity and support that our FDK program is such a success! Have a wonderful weekend and try to stay warm. We will see you all back Monday. Happy Math Wednesday! We saw patterns everywhere! We made an AABB pattern in our daily morning message and John was able to extend it. I asked the class to look for patterns or make their own patterns today and within 5 minutes a group of boys went to the carpet and made AB, AABB, and ABC patterns with the blocks. Owen made his own pattern creation out of crayons too. We also introduced a one to one correspondence center with bead and pipecleaners. We were so amazed at our JK girls. They jumped right in and we heard "what is this number Reese?" "Oh, 9" Then the girls would count out the beads. Super! This afternoon we focused on our ice study. We watched a video about how salt melts ice and why. Then we added ice to two jars and one jar had a teaspoon of salt. We were surprised how quickly the one with salt melted. Then we placed ice in a container with a string. We sprinkled salt on it. About 20 min later when we lifted up the string the ice stuck to it. Lastly, we mixed food colouring in an icecube tray and then brought it outside to see how quickly it froze. It only took 20 min. Brr! Happy Monday. We began our week with our snow experiment. We filled our water table with snow and made snowcones, snowballs and popsicles. We also put loosely packed snow and tightly packed snow in jars and set them in the window. We made predictions as to which one would melt first. We took time elapsed pictures to document our experiment... and the the results were... the loosely packed snow. Ryan guessed that the reason it melted more quickly was "because it was a little looser so it could melt first." WOW! As part of our Monday religion lessons, we made doves to compliment the story of Jesus' baptism. Hayden told us that the reason we made doves was because it "showed us the Holy Spirit". Beautiful! This coming Friday, Jan.24th is our class PJ and movie day. We will be providing the popcorn. We will also be baking in the morning, so if you are able, we are accepting non-perishable food donations for the Stittsville Food Bank. Thank you so much for your continued generosity. This week the gospel is about the baptism of Jesus by John the Baptist. To celebrate this, we created our own Jesus being baptized in the River Jordan craft. Mrs. Shackleton told the students the story of Jesus being baptized using the smartboard. We continue to concentrate on French winter words. We wrote out a daily message and guessed what French word went with what picture. Check out the songs section of this website for our "Bonjour l'hiver and Jouer au hockey" songs. Friday was such a busy day! We had a really new and exciting inquiry happen today. John brought in a book that he made all by himself titled "The elephant who walked along". It was really interesting and John told us that he was the author and illustrator. We then noticed a good number of students made their own books and told us about their illustrations. Our snowflake inquiry was also active, with our friends John, Preston and Hayden giving their friends tutorials on how to construct a snowflake. As well, we made our own "bonhomme de neige" today out of boxes. We named him Olaf. We had a dino scavenger hunt in the sand table. Owen was so excited when he found fossils! As well, we also made our own "movie" booklets. Thanks so much to Miss. Jennifer for helping scaffold upon this inquiry. Have a wonderful weekend and see you all back Monday! God Bless! |
Mme Boudreau and Mrs. Shackleton
Hi! My name is Mme B and I have been teaching kindergarten for the last 10 years and teaching since 1996. This is my 4th year teaching full day kindergarten with the play-based model. I am learning so much from our students and look forward to each school day to see what new inquiries will emerge and grow! Archives
